For our first instalment of “Elevate Your Knowledge”, the team at Rideau Elevator Services have some important tips for you to consider as the rain and snow begins to fly. Ok, enough about snow.
- Ensure your elevator contractor is checking the elevator pit and machine room monthly (particularly after it rains heavily) to determine if there is an accumulation of water in the pit, or a leak in the machine room. The sooner you know, the quicker the problem can be addressed.
- Check your sump pumps. Often water accumulation in elevator pits is the result of faulty sump pumps. A dependable pump could save you a costly refurbishment of elevator pit equipment.
- Install floor mats near the entrance to the building, and near the elevators to absorb salt, water, and stones that are tracked into buildings by normal traffic flow. These mats will prevent the build up of elements in the door tracks, and sills. Over time, salt will eat away at grout, and sills, creating potential bowing problems that are costly to fix.
- Ensure your machine room temperature is set to the manufacturer recommended setting, to avoid costly service calls related to cold, or heat.
- Double check the entrances to your roof top machine rooms, to make sure stairs are steady & braced, clear of debris, snow & ice.
- Ensure the elevators are arriving level into the floor, as the temperature drops. Changes in oil viscosity can change the performance of valves which can create problems for elevators arriving level into the floor. Your contractor should be checking oil levels and levelling monthly to address these issues before they become problems for you.
